Bareilles has already performed numerous songs on her album What's Inside: Songs from Waitress, which she released six months before the musical debuted.

"Sugar, Butter, Broadway!" Bareilles, 37, posted on social media alongside two photos of herself - one in costume for her upcoming Broadway debut, another of her youthful self in costume for one of the school and community-theater productions in which she acted while growing up in California. Mueller received a Tony nomination for Waitress and is set to take her final bow in the show on March 26. The Grammy and Tony nominee will take on the main role of Jenna Hunterson, which was originated by Tony victor Jessie Mueller. Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics for the show. While Bareilles has not performed as an actress on the NY stage, she did reveal in her book Sounds Like Me: My Life (So Far) that she auditioned for the role of Cinderella in the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production of Into the Woods-a role she coincidentally lost to Mueller.

Waitress is a musical adaptation of the 2007 indie film which centers around Jenna, a pregnant waitress in an unhappy marriage who relies on her pie-making skills to give her a better life. "I feel like there is a natural draw to go where you came from". Bareilles has some big shoes to fill; she plans to work with an acting coach and hit the gym to increase her physical stamina in preparation.

After revealing her start date, the singer joked, "Panic attacks available now".
