Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal is now a set and a break up against South African Kevin Anderson.

This was Thiem's first win over Murray in three attempts, but both of their previous two contests had gone to three sets and this was another scrap.

World number five Nadal, who captured a 10th Monte Carlo Masters last weekend, will face Dominic Thiem in the final after the Austrian stunned world number one Andy Murray 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.

A day after needing a final-set tie-break to see off Albert Ramos-Vinolas in just shy of three hours, the Scot again endured another gruelling work-out.

Andy Murray is set to play Spaniard Feliciano Lopez later this afternoon.

Thiem started strong, breaking Murray's first two service games before adding a third break en route to taking the first set.

"He's the No. 1 in the world, so you have to find something in between playing aggressive and not making mistakes", Thiem said.

The 26-year-old had overcome Thiago Monteiro and Mischa Zverev to make it this far in the event, having never previously triumphed on clay at ATP Tour level.

The Scott struggled to get into his stride as he dropped his serve three times in the set, Thiem ruthlessly converting three out of three break points, to his opponent's one.

Thiem will meet either nine-times Barcelona Open champion Rafael Nadal or Argentine Horacio Zeballos in Sunday's final.

Mladenovic beat former top-ranked Sharapova 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

The 14-time Grand Slam victor will now face Dominic Thiem in the final after the Austrian defeated world number one Andy Murray earlier on Saturday.
