Thornberry also congratulated former Governor Sonny Perdue (R-GA) on his confirmation and swearing in as Secretary of Agriculture.

Refusing to call it a pathway to citizenship, Perdue says he would like to find a solution that would allow workers in the ag industry to remain in the USA legally.

"The Farmers Roundtable provided the chance for the president to hear directly from the people on the front lines of American agriculture about what they are dealing with every day", Perdue said. He also addressed members of the press, answering questions on topics from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to wildfires. On Jan. 23, the USA withdrew from TPP, and just this week, there have been rumblings of the US leaving NAFTA if the agreement is not reworked.

"Saying something was contemplated is not necessarily saying something was done or going to be done".

"The fact that the national election was nearly 6 months ago and we finally have a Secretary of Ag. fantastic to me that he's finally on board here", says Jaspers on KELO Radio's It's Your Agri-Business with Bill Zortman. As ag chief, Perdue will oversee the nation's nutrition, farm and forestry programs and will play a major role in shaping the upcoming US farm bill and in trade negotiations. Agriculture finally has a new leader, and I know he is ready to go to work on reducing farmers' regulatory burden and helping those struggling with depressed commodity prices.

NAFTA is generally popular with farmers, as Canada and Mexico are respectively the No. 1 and 3 markets for farm exports, worth billions of dollars. Third, we asked the president to protect the gains agriculture has made under existing trade agreements and work for even greater market access. "I love Canada. But they've outsmarted our politicians for many years, and you people understand that".

Blake Hurst, president of the Missouri Farm Bureau, the largest farm organization in Missouri, expressed relief that the approval process for Perdue is over.

"While on balance NAFTA has been good for American agriculture, we think it can be improved", Perdue says. Robert Guenther, senior vice president for public policy said, "This initiative has got the potential to have a tremendous impact on the ability of fresh fruit and vegetable providers to be in business". He was officially sworn in Tuesday, becoming the 31st USA secretary of agriculture. He'd like to rework programs for cotton and dairy producers.

Now it has not been determined who the Under Secretary of Agriculture will be. "That translates into better service for a better product for our producers and consumers".

Perdue believes the Trump Administration is helping create "a spirit of optimism and hopefulness in this nation that we vastly needed".
