Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, who have long advocated for a government-run universal health care option, similar to Australia's Medicare system.

Democrats, and more than a handful Republicans, say Trump's health care plan will leave millions of Americans without insurance and raise private costs for those with pre-existing conditions.

During the meeting, Trump promised the AHCA would bring "fantastic health care" to millions of Americans now suffering under Obamacare.

"I shouldn't say this to our great gentlemen and my friend from Australia ... cause you have better healthcare than we do", Trump said. "I am going to take care of everybody", he told 60 Minutes. All right, the president has just said it.

The president made the remark on the day that he heralded the House Republican vote to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The meeting was the first face-to-face encounter between President Trump and Prime Minister Turnbull.

The World Health Organization ranked the U.S.as 37th out of 191 countries on a study of overall national health system performance in 2016 - behind Australia, at 32, but well ahead of bottom-tier countries like Sierra Leone, Myanmar and Central African Republic.

Donald Trump and Malcolm Turnbull on Friday. "You've flown over halfway across the world, he's stuck in some waiting room in NY and he's been snubbed by the president of the U.S".

'Thank you Mr Trump for admitting that universal health care is the better way to go, ' Mr Sanders later tweeted.

However, other provisions - like the controversial mandates of Obamacare requiring insurance companies to cover mental health services, contraception, paediatric care, and other items - will require a two-thirds majority in order to pass. "We affirmed the tremendous friendship between the United States and Australia", Trump said.

On Thursday night, Trump raised eyebrows when he highly praised Australia's universal healthcare system even though that type of system is criticized by conservatives. Australia, like almost every other major developed country, has a universal health care system.

"Under Obamacare, the Medicaid program here in the USA expanded quite a lot", says March.

Speaking at the event on board the USS Intrepid, Mr Turnbull said the "stability and prosperity of our region over so many decades has been secured - and is secured today - by the United States", a commitment he said was renewed by President Trump. "We are going to get this passed through the Senate".
