Andy Murray suffered a third-round exit at the Madrid Open but Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are into the quarter-finals.

Coric saved two break points to hold for 2-2 in the opening set before a run of three consecutive breaks of serve opened up a 4-3 lead for the 20-year-old. Cuevas won one of the points of the tournament with a no-look victor with his back to the court after a lob shot by Zverev early in the second set. Murray said that one of the key factors that affected his game was that he was not able to make it hard for his opponent as he kept making the same mistakes again and again in a lot of the rallies.

"I made a lot of unforced errors and I also didn't find anyway to make it a more competitive match, so that's the most disappointing thing for me". I just kind of let the same things keep happening, making mistakes very early in a lot of the rallies.

"Things can change fast but you need to find exactly what it is that is going wrong and how you're going to fix that and commit to it". That was very obvious.

"In the beginning I wasn't playing 100 percent", Nishikori said.

Dominic Thiem produced a phenomenally gutsy performance to beat Grigor DImitrov, while Alexander Zverev ousted 11th seed Tomas Berdych and David Goffin overcame Milos Raonic in straight sets.

Second-ranked Djokovic has also struggled this season but stayed alive in Madrid with the two-set victory over Lopez.

Nadal was aided by Kyrgios' loss of desire towards the end of the second set, the Australian failing to match his early energy as a potential upset moved further from his grasp.

"'I definitely think I need to be concerned about today", Murray added.

“I couldnt imagine this when I woke up this morning, I always believed but I wasnt sure how I was going to play.

She will now play Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia for a place in the final after she overcame Kiki Bertens of The Netherlands 6-3, 6-3.

Nishikori, a finalist in Madrid in 2014, is playing in his first tournament since March. In the last few months of 2016 Murray pushed his body to new extremes - jet-hopping from Beijing to Shanghai, Vienna to Paris in between the US Open and the World Tour Finals - in the hunt for valuable ranking points.

"Hopefully I can do that with my team, and play better in Rome and Roland Garros".

After suffering his own struggles of late, Djokovic was encouraged by his display in seeing off Lopez and a partisan crowd to reach the last eight.

In the women's Madrid Open, third seed Simona Halep remains on course to defend her title as she thrashed American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1.

"One break was enough, 5-4, 6-5, both sets", Djokovic said in his post-match interview. "It's always tough to play with someone who has a big serve".

France's Kristina Mladenovic also made it through to the final four.
