The unnamed man, draped in our national flag, crashed a performance by Ukrainian singer Jamala, who was entertaining the crowd while the official votes were tallied.

However, that was all just a ruse and after an investigation by Australian broadcaster SBS, the identity of the streaker has been revealed and confirmed as former Ukranian celebrity journalist-turned-celebrity prankster Vitalii Sedluk. The singer had prepared her new music to share it with the Eurovision viewers but still, an intruder managed to bypass the security guards and get on the stage while Jamala was presenting to the world her new song.

The Ukrainian authorities did not see the amusing side, and have detained him for a period of 72 hours.

It was a brief embarrassment for Australia who have been invited to perform at the competition for the past three years by the host country on a wildcard entry. He could face anything from a fine to five years in prison on hooliganism charges, Mr Avakov said in a Facebook post.

Mr Sediuk has a history of carrying out pranks.

He also breached the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival to try to climb under actress America Ferrera's dress as she posed for photographers.

I think we all owe Australia a gargantuan apology after last night's Eurovision Song Contest. Bulgaria came second and Moldova third.
