MONTMELO, Spain (AP) - Lewis Hamilton took pole position ahead of Sebastian Vettel at the Spanish Grand Prix, restoring Mercedes' dominance in Formula One qualifying on Saturday.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time, clocking in at one minute and 19.149 seconds, subtracting 51 thousandths of a second from the time of the Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel.

Dutch teenager Max Verstappen, who became Formula One's youngest victor in Spain previous year after Hamilton and then team mate and 2016 champion Nico Rosberg collided at the start, will start Sunday's race in fifth place for Red Bull. It was also a race in which Mercedes and Ferrari both lost a vehicle to retirement, allowing Daniel Ricciardo to take third for Red Bull despite finishing 72 seconds off the pace of the front two.

"This was the rawest fight I have felt in a long time". "This is what the sport needs to have at every single race, and this is why I race, and what got me into racing in the beginning. Mark Webber taught me lessons over the years and I still haven't got it so I don't know, I think I need to go back to school, sit down and have a look but still the last chicane is a bit tricky".

The pair traded quickest laps throughout the race before switching positions again, until the final round of stops when Vettel came out alongside Hamilton.

However, the man in seventh stole the headlines as Alonso produced a stunning performance at his home race one day after a first-lap disaster in Friday practice.

As for Vettel, the fact that the German even took part in qualifying yesterday was a big deal as his Ferrari auto had a water leak after final practice session and they had to quickly to fit a new engine to his vehicle. "To have those close battles with him, a four-time champion, is awesome".

Finns Valtteri Bottas, in the second Mercedes, who also had an engine change on Saturday morning, and Kimi Raikkonen, in the second Ferrari, were third and fourth fastest.

Vettel now has 104 points to Hamilton's 98.

"I'm sorry, I'm very sorry, but it drives me insane and I can tell you a reason you'll understand", he told Sky Sports. "Obviously, the main focus is on this year, that's not a secret and it's not a line that I drop, it's a fact for all of us inside the team".

"It would have been nice to get them the pole, but hopefully we can do well tomorrow". I don't know if we touched but I managed to stay ahead so it was really close.

Two of the Force India drivers finished in the top ten with Sergio Perez at eighth while another Esteban Ocon ended at tenth, less than a second behind Felippe Massa.
