Seven months ago, before San Antonio's season-opening rout of the Warriors, Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich was asked whether he still gives Steve Kerr advice.

"The more he can be around, the more he can address the team, the more he can participate in practice and film sessions, we love it", said acting head coach Mike Brown.

Kerr is three weeks into an indefinite hiatus from the bench to tend to chronic pain, and his status for the rest of the playoffs remains in doubt. The reigning National Basketball Association coach of the year is recovering from a procedure to alleviate debilitating symptoms stemming from two back surgeries in 2015.

Steph Curry finished the game with 40 points, 19 of which came in the third quarter. The pace will come from that.

The Warriors surely appreciated seeing their leader, who hasn't coached the team since Game 2 of the first round due to health issues, back in the fold. "Settle in, and we'll be all right". His downtime is to help us get prepared for the series and you know he misses being around the day-to-day routine, the atmosphere, practice and locker rooms and games and all that. "It's been very hard for him, and he's shown a lot of courage getting through what he's gotten through".

Though Kerr did not speak to the media, Stephen Curry was glad to have his head coach back and taking part in team meetings.

Kerr had been at Duke University Medical Center receiving treatment for his symptoms, which include headaches, nausea and blurred vision, during the Warriors' second-round series against the Jazz. "And so the more he can be around, the better feel that all of us have ... it was good to see him out here today".
