Today, with a 2-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur, the final game at White Hart Lane, United were mathematically eliminated from top four finish contention.

Jose Mourinho has turned his focus to Manchester United's Europa League final, referring to their Premier League run-in as "matches we don't want to play".

Victory over Ajax Amsterdam in the final on May 24 would be rewarded with a place in next season's Champions League, Europe's most lucrative club competition. "But we fight for titles and probably other clubs finishing in the top four, probably they would like to be in our position, to try and fight for a title".

The Europa League final against Ajax will then be played on the following Wednesday. Moreover, United were besieged with injury troubles and Mourinho made it clear that it was impossible to fight on two fronts with just 15 players.

Paul Pogba is expected to miss Manchester United's Premier League clash with Southampton on Wednesday after being given compassionate leave to attend his father's funeral. Because if I have Ashley Young, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, if I had these guys I can rotate, I can go for every match.

"I do not want to think about next season - I want to think about the final we have to play in". I can't stop thinking about what could have been... but that's life that's football, you win some you lose some.

"We've won the FA Community Shield and the EFL Cup, and obviously we're delighted to have reached the final of the Europa League, the only major trophy we have never won". [Daley] Blind will not play against Southampton, [Marouane] Fellaini will because he's not played the last three [league] matches [due to suspension].

"Making the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League available for free to everyone in the United Kingdom shows that BT really is serious about making sport much more accessible to the public", said BT's chief executive John Petter.

The game is likely to be a drab affair considering United's commitments and the Saints' position as neither side will go for the jugular.

As well as missing out on the League Cup, Southampton will be unable to improve on the previous season's league placing ― sixth ― for the first time in eight campaigns.

United said its participation in the second-tier tournament, in the current season, had proved financially positive. "We believe when the new stadium opens its doors it will help the club to the next level", he said.
