Volvo, Google partnership to enable Android on next-gen cars

First Microsoft's Cortana made the leap from Windows to the Android lock screen, and Android followed up by integrating Alexa into its shopping app. It will only work as a third party app on Apples' devices.

Cross-platform functionality seems to be the name of the game digitally speaking as we see Apple apps for Android devices and previously Google-exclusive apps coming to iOS.

Like the Assistant on Google's own Pixel smartphones, the iPhone version will take commands via voice, the person said. The aforementioned Google Allo hit iTunes on the same day as the Android version this past fall. However, Android Auto is not a full operating system, as it merely uses an in-dash vehicle display as an external touchscreen monitor.

The VW-owned auto company will be bringing what it calls the Audi Q8 sport concept technology platform - in other words a concept vehicle dashboard - to this week's Google I/O developer conference.

The automaker will develop the next generation of its infotainment and connectivity solution based on Android, providing access to a range of apps and services.

There's also talk of Assistant reaching GE's home appliances. While the navigation map continues to use the Audi-typical HERE database, the driver can also choose to navigate with Google Maps.

Today Google's only spot in the automobile market is Android Automobile, which is not an OS. More details are expected later this week at Google I/O when operational examples of this new Google OS will be presented on a Volvo V90 Cross Country and Audi's Q8 Sport Concept SUV.

Reminder Controls is one of the most important features for a smart, home assistant, as it should have the capacity to remind the user of things.

The four-ringed brand is hopeful about the future with the seamless integration of Android, which has the possibility of developing new applications that will find their way into its cars. As far as Any.Do an iOS goes, the app has received its latest massive update a few months ago. What other features Assistant on iOS has in store, we'll have to wait in just a few hours or days.
