We'll find out if it was worth the wait in just a few months.

A date relevant to the interests of at least one staffer. The Sonic Mania standard edition for Nintendo Switch will be available to purchase digitally at launch on August 15.

There are a lot of reasons to be hopeful that Sonic Mania will be the game that finally ends the dreaded "Sonic Cycle" of hype that sprouts up every time a new Sonic game is revealed.

The game will let players take the role of Sonic, Knuckles or Tails as they pursue Dr. Eggman. It brings back the classic 2D side-scroller gameplay of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the 16-bit Sega Genesis from 1991. Sonic Mania is developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games in collaboration with Sonic Team. Discover a myriad of never-before-seen hidden paths and secrets.

In fact, if you pre-order the game, you get an additional 10% off from the final price- which only comes down to $2, but still, it's hard to argue against savings on an already cheap game. To celebrate the announcement, we're treated to a brand-new trailer.

The trailer is bookended by some charming, seemingly hand-drawn animation of Sonic, before cutting to some slick gameplay footage of the blue hedgehog doing what he does best - running at breakneck speed through branching levels while viciously stomping the life out of adorable robots.
