He first rose to prominence with a series of impressive short films like Alive in Joburg, which served as the inspiration for the blockbuster District 9 (which earned four Academy Award nomination).

Your first look at Neill Blomkamp's Oats Studios has arrived via a monster-ridden teaser trailer.

The aim for Oats Studios is to release free short films over YouTube while also offering a paid version of the same film over Steam, which would include more assets like concept art, 3D models, VFX content, etc.

Blomkamp, the director behind District 9 and Elysium, has been teasing his experimental project on social media for a while now.

Dubbed Oat Studios Volume 1, the project aims to distribute an experimental series of short science fiction films to fans via online streaming and is now eyeing different distribution methods. "Adapt or die. It was a simple as that".

We'll bring you more on Volume 1 and Blomkamp's other filmmaking plans as we get it. Other footage in the trailer appears to come from separate short films, one of which depicts USA army forces fighting in the jungle.

Check out the teaser trailer, which shows Dakota Fanning greeting the aliens with extreme prejudice and Sigourney Weaver giving combat orders.

"The new world altered everyone", the trailer's narrator says, though she could be talking about the film industry. While the famous director is still yet to confirm which streaming platforms he'll be using, a recent tweet suggests that he could stream these movies over Steam. The images he posted turned out to be one of the aliens seen in the trailer, as well as a Vietnam soldier.

The shorts appear to feature all the Blomkamp trademarks, including realistic CGI characters and environments, as well as socio-political subject matter relating to the human condition.
