"So we all owe Steve a big, big thank you", the president said.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Mr Trump said of the treatment of Mr Scalise, the No 3 GOP leader, who is in critical condition and underwent a third surgery at the MedStar Washington Hospital Centre. The hospital planned to hold a briefing on his condition later in the day Friday.

Scalise and four others were shot Wednesday morning during a Republican practice for the annual congressional baseball game. Vice-president Mike Pence also visited the hospital.

The charities benefiting from the game are the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and, after Wednesday's shooting, the Capitol Police Memorial Fund, the AP said.

The two sat side by side, wearing Louisiana State University's purple colored gear in honor of Scalise's alma mater. Doyle gave the winning trophy back to the Republicans to put in Scalise's office. "That's the source of unity and more than ever we must embrace it".

In critical condition and undergoing repeated surgery, GOP House Whip Steve Scalise faces a "much more difficult" struggle to recover from his gunshot wound than first thought, President Donald Trump says.

Scalise was rushed to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and was immediately taken into surgery.

The wife of wounded GOP congressman Steve Scalise says she is thankful for all the prayers and warm wishes her family has received since her husband was shot at a baseball practice. The shooter died after exchanging gunfire with police.

The shooter, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL, was shot and killed by Capitol Police officers who were in Scalise's security detail.

Sava also said Capitol Police Officer Crystal Griner, who was also transported to the MedStar facility is now, "in good condition and she's in good spirits".

The gunman, from Belleville, Illinois, was a home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park.

So far, investigators have not linked Hodgkinson to any radical groups, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Congressional Democrats beat their Republican counterparts in Washington's annual charity baseball game, an event marked by the shooting of Rep.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured.

"To the extent that people think this is just a game, they're wrong", Richmond told reporters Thursday.

The FBI declined to comment on the report.

The shooting prompted talk of improving security for politicians, most of whom are unaccompanied by officers in their normal day-to-day pursuits.
