White House staff canceled Trump's scheduled public events Wednesday and scrambled to bring details to the president as he watched the developments on television, including the news that the House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) and a congressional aide were shot.

"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement released on behalf of his kin, reports CNN.

"He is more responsive, and is speaking with his loved ones", the hospital said, adding that he had been downgraded to "serious" condition. When the members of the Republican team were announced, mention of Scalise's name drew a standing ovation throughout the stadium. "He remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".

"Both were purchased by the shooter from federal firearms licensees", the Capitol Police said in a statement.

He's also saluting the Capitol police officers injured in the attack on a Republican Congressional baseball practice. After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs.

Griner remained in the hospital in good condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to the ankle, according to a Friday update.

Investigators say Hodgkinson shot House Rep. Steve Scalise on Wednesday before he was killed by police who had been guarding Scalise on the Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field.

When Scalise arrived in the hospital, he had an "imminent risk of death" and was "as critical as you can be", doctors also said.

Scalise was fielding ground balls at second base when he was shot at a practice for the annual Republicans-Democrats baseball game. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital twice and planned to go again before Thursday night's game at Nationals Park.

Following a day that saw most congressional business canceled, the House approved legislation offering health insurance tax credits to some veterans while committees pondered subjects from federal land management to cybersecurity.

House Republicans met privately earlier to discuss the shootings, pray and sign oversized cards for the wounded. Democrats and Republicans played in honor of their grievously wounded colleague, Republican Rep. Steve Scalise. Though the game pegs Republicans against Democrats, attendees and participating lawmakers showed unity in wake of the shooting.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited the hospital Wednesday evening.
