She was taken off on a stretcher after about 25 minutes on the court.

The 32-year-old American's right knee appeared to buckle under her as she slipped during her second-round match with the Romanian Sorana Cirstea on court 17.

Her opponent Cirstea expressed concern about how long it took for her injury to be attended to by staff.

Safarova went to the court on learning of the injury sustained by her doubles partner and close friend.

Her partnership with Czech Lucie Safarova has proved hugely fruitful and, after winning titles at the US Open, Australian Open and French Open, they had hoped to achieve the rare feat of holding all four at the same time.

Mattek-Sands, who has endured a spate of injuries through her career, immediately clutched her knee and was heard screaming "please help me" in disturbing scenes.

Cirstea, who had dropped the first set 4-6 but took the second 7-6 (4), was declared the victor of the second round match.

"It was heartbreaking because she went into shock and it took a while until the medical team was there ..." Cirstea was later seen in tears. "These painkillers are not working", she reportedly said. I have never seen anything like this except in the movies. Her knee was in a very weird position. "I felt useless. All she kept saying was 'Sorana, help me, help me".

Tennis legends past and present rushed to Twitter to send Mattek-Sands their best wishes as news of the incident broke.

The screams coming from Wimbledon's Court 17 were bone-chilling.
