Capricornia MP Michelle Landry, who a year ago described the Turnbull Government's performance as "wishy-washy", has become the first Coalition MP to publicly urge Mr Abbott to take the highly coveted position in London, The Courier-Mail is reporting.

The job Malcolm Turnbull is doing as prime minister is approved by 37% (up 1% from last month), while 49% disapproved (up 4% from last month).

Mr Kennett said he had written a "laudatory" article praising Mr Turnbull's performance in his European trip but he was now in despair. Mr Abbott later returned to Britain to study at Oxford University. Seven people were killed, two of them Australian, in a June 3 attack on London Bridge and Borough Market.

Two Australians died in last month's van and knife attacks in south-east London.

The attackers killed South Australian nurse Kirsty Boden and Queenslander Sara Zelenak.

LONDON (AP) - Australia's leader has expressed confidence in Britain's plans to forge global trade deals once it leaves the European Union, saying Monday that his country will jump at the chance to strike a free trade deal with the United Kingdom.

"You might remember the days gone by when we used to say as politicians that when we travel overseas we don't talk about domestic politics", he said.

"They were very fearless men, very courageous men and women and I just want to thank them on behalf of all Australians".

"We move quickly - Australians are fleet of foot, we don't muck around", he said after talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Downing Street.

"They didn't think of themselves but went to help those who they saw in need".

In remarks interpreted as a swipe at leading conservatives such as former prime minister Tony Abbott, Mr Turnbull used a speech in London to say the Liberal Party is not a "conservative party" and that it needed to occupy the "sensible centre" of politics.

The UK can not legally negotiate trade agreements until after exiting the European Union but Mr Turnbull wants to move as quickly as possible when that happens.

Our Brexit negotiations have started well, and I have made clear to Prime Minister Turnbull that an ambitious and comprehensive bilateral trade deal with Australia remains a priority for the UK.

Before heading home, Mr Turnbull will also have an audience with the Queen.
