"For decades, there has been unceasing incitement against Israel, rife with false allegations about policies and actions in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount, from Palestinian and Israeli Arab religious and political leaders", Jonathan Greenblatt, the ADL's CEO, and Carole Nuriel, the director of its Israel office, wrote in a joint statement.

Israel opened Temple Mount to worshippers on Sunday, but Muslims upset with the security measures conducted prayers outside its gates for two days, reported the Jerusalem Post.

According to WAFA, Abbas has made several contacts with world powers to discuss the ongoing Jerusalem tension.

"I'm reading in the worldwide press about heavy pressure leveled at Prime Minister Netanyahu to give up our security needs on Temple Mount and cancel the metal detectors placed at the entrance, just as there are metal detectors at the Kotel and in Mecca", said Education Minister Naftali Bennett. In Islam, the same structure is referred to as the Noble Sanctuary, with Al-Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock as the third holiest site for Muslims.

Scuffles broke out in the West Bank on Wednesday, after the Fatah party, led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, ordered a "Day of Rage" over the placement of metal detectors.

Israeli Police fired shots in an attempt to disperse people protesting against the mosque closure and restrictions for Muslims to enter the mosque.

Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to Israel's Reuven Rivlin on Thursday, ahead of planned mass protests on Friday by Muslim worshippers over security measures imposed by Israel at the walled shrine. The officers killed were Kamil Shanan, 22, and Hail Satawi, 30, Army Radio reported. "In addition to harming the Palestinians, the measures also harm the special Jordanian status regarding the holy sites".

Israel did not coordinate the changes with Jordan, which serves as the custodian of the Muslim-administered site, according to a Jordanian government official.

The fate of the compound, holy to both Jews and Muslims, is an emotional issue and forms the centerpiece of rival Israeli and Palestinian national narratives.

Erdan commented on the report that the Shin Bet was opposed to the idea of placing metal detectors at the holy site. The three Israeli Arabs from the northern town of Umm al-Fahm who carried out the attack all held identity cards, allowing them the same freedom of movement as anyone else.

"Following an additional violation of the visitation rules for the Temple Mount by a group of Jewish visitors who ascended the Mount, Jerusalem District Commander Yoram Levy ordered the group removed from the area and Temple Mount closed to Jewish visitors", a spokesperson for the police said.
