"The adjustment work involving the buildings core structure was going on since the last eight days, and despite some residents raising an alarm, the BMCs Engineering department completely failed to act in time".

"The initial finding of eight dead was wrong".

Amid the shock and sorrow, survivors pointed fingers at the extensive repairs being carried out in a maternity home on the ground floor owned by Sunil Shitap, a local strongman linked to the Shiv Sena.

Mumbai Fire Brigade' chief fire officer has said the rescue teams are removing the reinforced concrete slabs of the collapsed building to rescue the people trapped inside.

The seven deceased include a three-month-old baby and four women, Rahangdale said. Sources state that the report on the incident will be submitted in 15 days.

In a shocking incident, a four-storied building in Ghatkopar collapsed on Tuesday morning. "Scores of people are still feared trapped under the debris", the officer said. A rescue van along with 108 ambulances also reached the spot. "Then I came out of my building and found a lot of dust, cries and noise of people seeking help. I saw parts of the building collapse", an eyewitness was quoted as saying by PTI.

A resident of the building, Reeta Doshi and her son were lucky to escape the crash as she had just stepped out of the building for temple. Four people have been successfully rescued from the debris. The fact that the nursing home on the ground floor was not in operation may have also saved several lives.

Diyora had left for his office just before the building caved in.
