The Toffees' highest profile signing was Wayne Rooney, who grew up an Everton fan and started his professional career with the club.

While the Irishman has returned to training after missing out on the last pre-season game against Sevilla due to a knee knock, he's being left out of Saturday's matchday squad as a precautionary measure.

As he prepared for the visit of Stoke to Goodison on the opening weekend of the season, he offered cautious comparison between his own threadbare forward line and the powerful attacking units that last season's top six can boast.

But the manager concedes that, for all Everton's shrewd business, it may only allow them to stand still, at least in terms of league position.

"But still now we really have one striker, in my opinion".

Koeman said: "We know it is a tough start but it is all about, in 38 games, getting the points".

Bournemouth conceded 67 goals last season, but the arrivals of Ake and goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Stamford Bridge should improve their solidity as Howe looks to build on last season's impressive ninth-place finish.

"It is hard because if we had Bolasie and Coleman available and we have Funes available, the situation is different to now", he told the Liverpool Echo.

"We can improve and spend money but everyone can improve and is spending money".

If they can get Sigurdsson then they will be a certainty for seventh. They are tasked with the giant responsibility of replacing Romelu Lukaku.

"I don't say impossible, but 25 goals is a lot and we have to find other ways and productivity from other players and we like to bring in other players in".

Mark Hughes hasn't won any of his last six opening day Premier League games (D2 L4) in charge of three different clubs in that time (Fulham, QPR and Stoke).

Wayne Rooney makes his first Premier League start for Everton in 13 years as they welcome Stoke City to Goodison Park this afternoon.

"It's one that's frustrated a lot of people, not least myself, but now it's likely to get done unless there's any last-minute hitches, but we don't anticipate any".
