"Indira Canteen". Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched Karnataka government's Indira Canteen scheme in Bengaluru but during the inauguration speech he had a slip of the tongue.

Rahul Gandhi, who arrived at the Kempegowda International Airport at 10 am, was received by Chief Minister Siddharamaiah and other Congress leaders.

The lunch and the dinner menu will change daily.

On the off chance that you do not find a canteen within close quarters, you can download the Indira Canteen app on Google Play.

One must now wait and watch to see if the move by Siddaramaiah to get Rahul Gandhi to inaugurate this pro-poor initiative works out or backfires.

According to original plan, the civic body in Bengaluru had planned to set up almost 200 Indira canteens by 15 August.

"I would like the government to pay special attention to this fact that the canteen should have excellent quality food, excellent hygiene and people walking out of this canteen must feel that they not only had safe food, but tasty food", Gandhi urged the state government.

"We will also open similar canteens in other cities and towns across the state after studying their pros and cons and associated benefits to the poor in the city", noted Mr. Siddaramaiah. The Chief Minister has denied accusations that land identified for parks and playgrounds were being utilised to build the canteens. According to officials, the canteens will serve 500 plates of food for now, but this number is also expected to increase in the future. Many members of the Congress turned up at the Indira Canteen and waited for hours to taste the food. The state government has been in a hurry to set up these canteens ahead of next year's state elections.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had announced this ambitious project when he presented this year's budget in state Assembly on March 15, 2017. What is wrong in copying programmes for the poor?

In the first phase on Wednesday, 101 canteens were launched and another 97 are set to be launched on October 2.
