Los Angeles County Unemployment Rate Rises to 4.5 Percent

The department said in a report released Friday that the July rate was four-tenths of a point under the year-ago rate of 3.2 percent.

California's unemployment rate in July was 4.8 percent while the national unemployment rate was 4.3 percent.

Over the year, Colorado employers have added 43,400 jobs, with 39,500 coming in the private sector and government accounting for 3,900 jobs.

Preliminary estimates show job losses spread across most industries, although the deepest losses remain concentrated in industries closely tied to oil and gas.

Despite a slight increase over the past month, the unemployment rate is a reflection of the state's constricting labor market, Braun said.

Over the year, the unemployment rate is down one percentage point from 3.4 percent. Summer months tend to have higher unemployment rates as students looked for jobs when they're off school. Financial activities gained 300 jobs for the month and is up 100 jobs for the year.

Over the past year, Oregon, Arkansas, Florida, New Hampshire, Utah and Texas saw the largest percentage job gains - with growth of at least 2.4 percent.

IN gained 3,600 jobs in the private educational and health services and 1,000 in the manufacturing sectors in July.

Civilian employment in the county rose by about 1,000 to 4.89 million in July, while the number of unemployed jumped by about 5,000 to 231,000. The largest increase was posted in trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,500).

Government lost 1,700 (-0.4 percent) jobs over the month.
