AP Top 25: Sooners and Cowboys crack Top 10 in preseason rankings

The Seminoles will open their season September 2 against No. 1 Alabama in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, site of the College Football Playoff National Championship.

That game, of course, will happen in Atlanta, where the Alabama Crimson Tide will face off against the Florida State Seminoles in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Here's a number Auburn fans can look at without protective eye wear: For the third time in head coach Gus Malzahn's five-year tenure on the Plains, Auburn will open the season as a top-15 team. The team started last season ranked fifth in the preseason version, before a 2-2 start led to a drop in the rankings and the firing of coach Les Miles. The Crimson Tide was also named the nation's No. 1 team in the USA Today's Amway Coaches Poll released August 3.

The Tigers begin their first season under coach Ed Orgeron on September 2 against BYU in Houston. It's 12 spots higher than than where they finished last season, at No. 24. Penn State has the record at 34 from 1968-2002.

Kansas State will enter the football season as a ranked team for the first time since 2014. SEC East rivals Georgia (No. 15) and Florida (No. 17) follow and Tennessee is No. 25. OU's all-time average preseason AP rank is 6.7, best in the nation (Michigan is second at 7.4). Auburn is No. 12 and LSU is right behind at 13.

With Miami at No. 18 and South Florida at No. 19, the state of Florida has four teams ranked in the preseason poll for the first time.

- 8.0 teams (80 percent total) that started the season ranked in the top 10 finished the season in the Top 25.
