Shakib helps Bangladesh win Day 1 honours of Dhaka Test

Bangladesh - which only attained Test status in 2000 - have moved on from that defeat, and hope to build on recent stronger form to impress fans with a series win on home soil against Australia.

"Tamim and Shakib took the game on", said Lyon after the day's play. We might as well be talking about the #darkages.

Nafees became a house hold name by cracking a century against Australia during their last visit in Bangladesh in 2006 and though both, Shakib and Tamim, failed to translate their score into a big hundred, the knocks were worth more than individual milestones.

The visitors trained in Darwin, a tropical city in northern Australia, ahead of the Bangladesh tour to adjust to the hot and humid conditions expected for the two-Test series. The 2010 series didn't happen either.

But he maintains the match is still in the balance and has confidence that Australia can turn their fortunes around on day two. He also expressed concern about Australia's performance in sub-continent, saying they need to improve themselves. Finally, a series that has not been postponed, and if the weather allows, it should be a fascinating contest.

How do I watch the Bangladesh-Australia clash live?

Usman Khawaja returned to the team while Ashton Agar will be playing a Test after four years.

All three remain well adrift of the leading Test performers of the past six years, Lyon's fellow spinners Rangana Herath from Sri Lanka (305 wickets from 56 matches) and Ravi Ashwin from India who has snared 292 from 52 Tests with his off-spin.

Spinners Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan and Taijul Islam, who combined for 20 wickets during their historic win against England previous year, loom as the key players for the host.

But off-spinner Nathan Lyon got the prized scalp of Shakib in the second session while Glen Maxwell dismissed Tamim. But we're very close in that changer oom.

He averages 40 with the bat, 33 with the ball, and is No.1 on the ICC's rankings for Test allrounders, yet because he doesn't play for one of the so-called "big teams" often, Shakib Al Hasan still probably doesn't get the worldwide recognition he deserves.

A humble Lyon said it was a special achievement to surpass Benaud, a beloved figure in Australian cricket.

Usman Khawaja (1) was run out the following over after attempting a single but being sent back by Matt Renshaw.

Tamim, who is Bangladesh's highest scorer in both Test and ODIs, showed he belongs in a class of his own as he did not lose his composure while seeing off the pacers during the crucial early period. The selectors will have a tough decision to make between Taskin Ahmed and Shafiul Islam, but Shafiul might just get the nod.

Rain and possible thunderstorms are forecast throughout the first Test. By the end of the day, Lyon took his career tally to 250 wickets, becoming Australia's second-most successful spinner in Tests behind Shane Warne.

"I've always said that I'm not about personal success but I woke up to a message from my mum and dad", Lyon said. "I won't say in all conditions, but in our conditions, we are better than them", said Shakib.

We look forward to the pre-Ashes photo shoot this winter. They might have worked out a method against India, but this is a different challenge.
