Arsenal's hopes of bringing in Lemar faded late on deadline day, however, as the winger apparently did not want to join a club that is unable to offer him Champions League football.

Now Monaco have signed Senegal forward Balde, who plays in a similar position to Lemar amid suggestions that the Frenchman has asked to leave Monaco.

The £92 million Hail Mary for Monaco's Thomas Lemar smacked of desperation and, with the player on global duty for France, the approach was just too late in the day to get anything done.

At 72 minutes with Les Bleus already 1-0 up, Lemar fired the ball into the net with a quite sublime volley from a headed clearance.

The Gunners were adament that they would not sell Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City, without finding a suitable replacement first. "I was focused on my match, that was all that mattered for me", added the winger who still has three years to run on his contract at the Stade Louis II.

Earlier in August, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said that their attempts to sign Lemar had ended and the deal was "dead".

Arsenal have reportedly made a mammoth offer for Thomas Lemar in the last few minutes.

"For the moment I am a Monaco player and everything is going very well".

Monaco subsequently fielded interest in several players on the back of that campaign, with Tiemoue Bakayoko, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe all departing.
