US Open: Serena Williams' coach lobs back insult at Maria Sharapova

Russia's Maria Sharapova returns to American Sofia Kenin during the third round match of the US Open on Friday.

Wozniacki spoke last week about her displeasure of Sharapova getting to play at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the best court at the U.S. Open in New York City.

"It doesn't matter if I played for a year, not even if I'm ranked 100 or number whatever, they're coming for me".

Mouratoglou continued to the NY Post to make his case that the Maria Sharapova that came back after her ban is a different person and that the tour is filled with more talent as well.

Sharapova may be down in the depths of a world No. 146 ranking, a few months removed from her return to the game after serving a 15-month suspension for testing positive at the 2016 Australian Open. "I mean, she has a big serve, big server of course", she said.

If his return has been welcomed by the public in NY, of which it is a players favorite with its dresses created by renowned stylists, some players had found fault with the decision of the US Open to give him a wild card (invitation) when she was suspended for doping.

Ninth-seeded Williams, who was playing in the round of 16 for the fourth time in a major this year, was pushed by her Spanish opponent but ultimately progressed in just under two hours.

Sharapova needed treatment on a blistered right hand in the final set but she insisted it was not a factor in her defeat. He joked after the match that he felt "quite warmed up by now", but those sets could begin to take a toll on 36-year-old sooner rather than later.

Earlier, Muguruza, swept Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 6-1 to qualify for the fourth round.

Maybe this was just one three-setter too many for Maria Sharapova. At this point, the match seemed to follow the expected route, with Sharapova in the lead, but the Russian failed to consolidate the break and with that, Kenin broke back and was back in the set.

"(The injury) played a quite significant part, and just being injured and not being able to keep that good form", Cilic said. She won a tournament in Stockton, Calif., and captured another event before the U.S. Open. Sharapova is looking for one of the greatest comebacks in the history of tennis after not playing for 19 months. It's the first time since 2010 that she reached the fourth round in every major. She won 40 percent and 27 percent of her first- and second-service points, respectively, and had four winners to 18 unforced errors.

Baby news from Florida turned heads as Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion and six-time US Open victor, gave birth to a baby daughter.

Sharapova, noting it wasn't her decision who played where, shook the shot off with aplomb.

"I think putting out a schedule where the No. 5 in the world in playing on Court 5, fifth match on after 11 [p.m.], I think that is unacceptable", Wozniacki told reporters after losing her Round of 64 match Wednesday to Ekaterina Makarova. "So I think that's probably where I kind of got a little fortunate there". I didn't know that, so...

Kenin fought back from 4-1 down in the first set to level, only for Sharapova to edge the set with a forehand in game 12 and so avoid a tie-break.
