Free pet microchipping in Collier County ahead of Hurricane Irma

All county shelters plan to continue caring for pets around the clock for Irma's duration, though their staffs will be divided between the animal facilities and the pet-friendly shelters for humans.

For those not looking to temporarily and permanently adopt a dog, it's also possible to give back through donations.

The dogs that arrived at Crites Field in Waukesha Monday, after a stop in Oklahoma, are dogs that were already in the shelter system, many long before Harvey's arrival. Through our partnerships with other animal welfare organizations, we have taken in some adoptable cats to make space at Houston area shelters for pets whose owners needed assistance as they were evacuating.

1-800-PetMeds® has also arranged to deliver pet supplies to Austin Pets Alive, a local pet shelter that is struggling to find and save pets who need help.

As a member of the Oklahoma Medical Response Corp's Animal Response Team, she was among the hundreds of Oklahomans who helped the Tulsa Humane Society take in more than 300 dogs and cats from Texas animal shelters before and after Hurricane Harvey made landfall.

During severe weather events, there is always a chance that pets will flee in fear or become separated from their owners.

"We're being extremely cautious not to do that", she said.

Paws 4 Life was told by Barr that she could take in seven dogs and a litter of puppies or eight dogs and one to two cats and a litter of cats.

Forty dogs affected by Hurricane Harvey are headed to Allegheny County.

"When it comes to animals and disaster", Tremblay said, "people really respond".
