A deputy leaving a hurricane shelter in Florida was killed in a vehicle crash.

A sheriff's deputy from Hardee County, Florida who had been helping at an evacuation shelter was killed Sunday morning on her way home.

The Naples Daily News reported the officer was Julie Bridges, a 13-year veteran of the department. She was planning on returning to work another shift this morning when she was killed.

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Greg Bueno says troopers are investigating the crash and no further details were immediately available.

The driver of other auto, whose name has not been released, was an employee of the Florida Department of Corrections.

No other vehicles were involved and both Bridges and Ossman were the sole occupants of their vehicles, police said.

"Our law enforcement and correctional officers work every day to keep Floridians safe", Gov. Rick Scott said in a statement.

Hardee County was in a curfew at the time of the accident. An unnamed sergeant at the Hardee Correctional Institute also died. "My heart goes out their families and the entire law enforcement and correctional community".

A total of at least 25 people have died as a result of the hurricane.
