A South Milwaukee couple is stuck in Puerto Rico - directly in Maria's path.

Hurricane Maria left a trail of "widespread destruction" on the small island of Dominica on Tuesday, then took aim at the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as a potentially catastrophic Category 5 storm.

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico Wednesday morning as a powerful Category 4 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center.

St. Croix is part of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"Some fluctuations in intensity could occur before the hurricane reaches Puerto Rico, but Maria is forecast to remain an extremely unsafe category 4 or 5 hurricane as it moves near or over the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico". The storm is expected to pass through Puerto Rico and the USA and British Virgin Islands on Wednesday, bringing with it the potential for life-threatening floods and destructive waves and mudslides.

Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands are recovering from Hurricane Irma, which came through September 6 and Sept 7. A curfew was in force on the British Virgin Islands, which has a population of just under 31,000.

Forecasters said the storm was packing winds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour) and was expected to thrash the island, which is home to over 3.4 million people, for 12 to 24 hours. "Thankfully we're in a hotel and we got staff here who, they are providing food, drinks, and shelter for us so we're blessed for that", Millan said.

Puerto Rico, still reeling from the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, is now bracing for Hurricane Maria as it heads towards the United States territory, Reuters reported. However, Iris's family and many other islanders plan to ride out the storm in their homes.

Dailey noted that her house on the island lost its roof, as did the official residence of the prime minister, Roosevelt Skeritt.

"I'm not sure that Category 5 is one that any of us are prepared for", Trinidad said. In the last message Echevarria sent her mother, she told her to stay safe, that she loves her, and that she is praying.
