1 dead, multiple injured in shooting at Tennessee church

One man who confronted the shooter while inside the church was violently pistol whipped, Aaron said. The hospitals have been placed on mass casualty alert.

All seven of the wounded including the suspect were taken to area hopsitals, five of them to Vanderbilt Medical Center and one to Skyline Medical Center.

Metropolitan Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron identified the suspect as 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson of Murfreesboro. "All of the wounded except for one is over the age of 60", the Nashville Fire Department said.

The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

The attacker allegedly fatally shot the woman then went into the church where he wounded six others.

This is a developing story, Check back for updates. Other churchgoers were taken to a safe location, the fire department confirmed.

Authorities say the gunman had pulled up to Burnette Chapel Church of Christ, exited his vehicle, and shot a woman in the parking lot.

The church has a weekly service starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.

According to officials, the call came in at 11:15 a.m.

Police captured the gunman, who was also among those injured.

"The guy shot at them, but they was able to get out", Love said.
