The former security guard was seen carrying a pink backpack where he allegedly carried flammable liquid, possibly alcohol or gasoline, which he then used to set the victims and himself on fire.

He was taken to hospital, suffering from burns, and later died.

Four children and their teacher were killed Thursday at their preschool in Brazil when a security guard set them alight.

The suspect also set himself on fire and was taken to hospital with burns covering nearly all his body after the attack at Innocent Children's People Municipal Education Centre in Janaúba, in Minas Gerias, south east Brazil.

The municipality of Janauba announced a 7-day mourning in region.

About 50 people were hospitalised with injuries, said Bruno Ataide Santos, director of the local hospital.

Police said Damião Soares dos Santos, 50, set the fire in the rural town of Janauba in Minas Gerais state.

Hours later, 10 people remained hospitalised in serious condition.

The initial death toll of four rose to six when two badly-burned children died, according to news reports which quoted fire officials.

"As the crèche is near our house, we heard noise and rushed over", Nelson de Jesus Silva, the father of one victim, told Globonews TV. "I woke him up early to bring him here and when I saw him again he was dead in the hospital". The motive of the attack was unclear.

He was reported to have mental health issues. Evacuation would have been more hard.

Officers found numerous bottles of alcohol at his home, Nunes said.

"I am very sorry for tragedy that led to death of 4 children in Janabua", said Brazilian president Michel Temer, social media.
