Stallone announced via Instagram late Monday, that he will be directing and producing a sequel to the 2015 boxing hit "Creed", which revitalized the venerable "Rocky" franchise, grossing $174 million worldwide.

Ryan Coogler directed the first "Creed".

Many see it as a natural progression for Balboa to make his final appearance in "Creed 2" before bowing out to allow Jordan to take "Adonis Johnson-Creed" to the next level.

After the first film's success both critically and commercially, it was only a matter of time before a sequel was announced.

Sylvester Stallone is returning to his most famous character for another round. He has quite a number of directorial credits including four films from the Rocky franchise the last being 2006's "Rocky Balboa".

My Entertainment World has an interesting nugget on their site, noting the start of filming of "Creed 2" to begin February 5, 2018 in Philadelphia.

The film was slated for a 2017 release, however, Coogler and Jordan's commitments to "Black Panther" pushed it to a yet unannounced date.

Stallone revealed earlier this year that Ivan Drago, the boxer who killed Apollo Creed in "Rocky IV", will be in the sequel.
