Apple shares fell 2.3 percent following the news at the market's open in response.

"While it's satisfying to see the new iPhones pack a slew of new features, boasting everything from a depth-sensing camera to the iPhone X's Animoji animated emojis, Apple still faces a challenge in convincing both the uninitiated and long-term fans alike that these new devices are the true innovation the market has long needed", Ernest Doku, mobile expert at uSwitch has previously said.

Apple has cut production orders linked to the iPhone 8 by more than 50% for the rest of the year, according to Bloomberg which cites the Economic Daily News, a Taipei-based publication.

Vinh wrote in his research report that "many respondents indicated that a meaningful portion of customers is buying iPhone 7 in lieu of the new iPhone 8, given the lack of significant enhancements in the new phone".

Shares in Apple have fallen slightly amid concern over poor demand for its new iPhone, and cuts to its production run.

Daniel Ives, chief strategy officer with GBH Insights, told Reuters, "iPhone 8 demand has been naturally soft out of the gates with the main event being the iPhone X launch in early November". Meanwhile, other Wall Street analysts downplayed Apple's move to cut back on iPhone 8 production, saying the device's production overall looks like what they had anticipated. The anticipation of the more advanced iPhone X would have caused the low iPhone 8 sales after the opening weekend.

Early adaptors appear to be taking a wait-and-see approach to the iPhone 8, which rolled into stores in late September, just weeks ahead of the game-changing iPhone X.

The Apple iPhone X has a lot to offer but the one thing that everybody is looking forward to seeing is the new facial recognition system that would be exclusively offered on the new Apple iPhone X this year.

The first batch of iPhone X devices has already been shipped out from Foxconn Electronics' site in Zhengzhou (Henan, China), said the sources.

Plus, the shadow of the looming iPhone X appears to be tamping down interest in the iPhone 8.

"Why are there two distinct models in Apple's iPhone portfolio?"
