Conte: Dropping Luiz Was Tactical

Antonio Conte claims that David Luiz's exclusion from his squad was necessary for Chelsea to be successful against Manchester United.

Asked about how he had only recently said David Luiz is his best defender, Conte said: "It can change, it can change".

A recurring theme of Conte's first season at Chelsea was his reluctance to engage in any public spats with rival coaches, but the fiery Italian has made an exception in recent months to bite back at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Conte said on Sunday that he doesn't know whether Luiz has a future at Stamford Bridge and according to the Times, Costa could be the cause of him being dropped and frozen out.

"It is a tactical decision", the manager told Sky Sports.

"I must take the best decision for the club, not for a single player". It's normal. This can happen to every one of my players, if I see that they are not in good form'.

He's just spent 90 minutes tucked inside Andreas Christensen's back pocket.

"I have to put my face in every situation and then to sometimes make important decisions".

Abramovich had been a driving force behind the decision to re-sign Luiz last summer and regards the Brazilian as a world-class defender, but that did not influence Conte's decision.

Luiz watched the United win from the stands alongside Kenedy, who also reportedly incurred Conte's wrath after being caught yawning during the team meeting that followed the Roma loss. Maybe in the future I can decide in a different way, or continue in this way. Sometimes I can make mistakes.

The pair had a heated exchange last Thursday after Luiz questioned Conte's tactics and was consequently sidelined from Friday's session.

Yes, reporters were probably right to sniff a bit of blood in the water at Luiz's demotion not to the bench, but to the stands. I was very happy for this.
