President of the AIFF from 1988 to 2008, Dasmunsi was the first Indian to serve as a match commissioner in a FIFA World Cup game.

"Sad to hear about the demise of former Union Minister and veteran political leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi", Kovind said in a tweet.

Das Munshi was so popular in political circles in Kolkata that during the 2016 campaign for the assembly elections he was included in the 90-member campaign committee for the state, despite him being in coma. "His death is a great loss to the politics of West Bengal", panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee said.

According to hospital sources, his family members including wife Deepa Dasmunsi and their son were at his bedside at that time.

His body will be taken to the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road in New Delhi, where top party leaders including its vice-president Rahul Gandhi will pay their homage.

"Our deepest condolences on the passing of respected Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, our veteran Congress leader and former union minister".

"His contribution to Indian football can never be forgotten".

Congress president Sonia Gandhi condoled the demise of the senior Congress leader, saying it is an "irreparable loss" to the party.

At the time of his stroke in 2008, Dasmunsi was heading AIFF, leading to Praful Patel taking over his president. Later, he was shifted to his home.

Congress MP Pradip Bhattacharya said that Dasmunsi had nerves of steel and steered the party out of critical situations both in Centre and West Bengal. "My thoughts are with Deepa Dasmunsi ji and family as well as his supporters", he said.

Dasmunsi suffered a massive stroke and was paralysed in October 2008, after which he slipped into coma.

Dasmunsi was the West Bengal State Congress president from 1970 to 1971.

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi".

Dasmunsi first became the AIFF President in 1989, succeeding K Ziauddin, and held the position for 19 years. Otherwise he could have done more in his political life. However, when he suffered a major heart stroke in 2008, his wife Deepa Dasmunshi, represented the constituency in 2009.
