Redmond scored the opener when Southampton held City to a 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium last season, and Guardiola was peeved that the England Under-21s star did not bring the same performance this time around.

"He was very passionate, intense and aggressive - but he was only very complimentary and positive to me", the 23-year-old later said on social media.

Speaking at a news conference to preview Monday's (AEDT) Premier League game against West Ham United, Guardiola was asked whether he regretted his actions and simply replied: "Yes".

"I was telling him how good a player he is", Guardiola insisted. You can agree or not, but if I'm explaining what happened and the people don't believe me then let's cancel our press conferences and just play the games.

Redmond has since said the Spaniard was "only very complimentary and positive".

"I've played in my career against lots of managers and I will never judge the way opponents play against one of my teams".

"I saw many Southampton games: he can play the way he played but he can play completely different. I can't say anything about that".

Guardiola has until December 4 to respond to the English FA's request.

"Last season he destroyed us here", said Guardiola following Thursday's game.

Premier League leaders City beat the Saints 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to Raheem Sterling's superb stoppage-time victor. Everyone wants to win the game, definitely.

"It's so complicated when teams defend with ten players". I said to Nathan you have to attack because you have the quality to do that. It's really frustrating for us but I am happy for them.

Guardiola apologised to referee Paul Tierney for his manic goal celebration when scored another sensational late victor to keep City eight points clear at the top of the. "But I think I was clear, we were clear, when Arsenal wanted him we said no, that's not going to happen, he's still young, we hope to make him happy and he can stay for longer. but it depends on the club and him".

Guardiola has previous in terms of animated on-field encounters, most famously with Joshua Kimmich after his Bayern Munich team drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park in 2016.
