A Merced family won't have to spend Christmas day away from home after firefighters extinguished an attic fire before it damaged the rest of the home.

At around 8:30 a.m., Phoenix fire crews responded to reports of a smoke filling up an apartment complex near 33rd and Northern avenues.

The fire, which investigators believe started on or near the outside wall of the home, spread to the attic above the garage, Franklin said. They have opened a shelter at the First Baptist Church on East Main Street in Spartanburg for those residents. "We ran into three frozen hydrants due to the weather", said Chicago Fire District Chief of Special Operations Tim Walsh.

The 911 calls came in around 6 o'clock Christmas Eve. Firefighters say she was hanging from the window and crews used a ladder to bring her down and one firefighter made a heroic grab to get her down. Officials said the homeowner was able to evacuate from her home safely with her dog. Cause of the fire is under investigation and damage is estimated at $27,000.
